Reading Between the Lines on Trans Inclusion at Work: Protecting Yourself from Tokenism
Whether you’re a seasoned professional or interviewing for your next job opportunity, there are ways to “read between the lines” to assess an organization’s true commitment to creating a safe, equitable, and welcoming environment for trans and GNC individuals to thrive at work. Trans and GNC folx are rethinking what it means to live authentically both in life and at work. This intention is leading many individuals to seek employment that is purposeful and affirming. Commitments to diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI), and accessibility in the workplace have become some of the main criteria for building and sustaining an environment that is safe for our community to thrive at work. Related, the difficulty employers are facing as they try to fill open positions can be a smokescreen for ongoing unfair labor practices. How can a DEI practice go beyond the performance of numerical metrics to truly serve the well-being of trans and GNC telent? In this 30-minute learning session, Nico Calvo Rosenstone, Global inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility business partner at Twitter and Félix Endara, technical assistance consultant at the Transgender Strategy Center, will outline what to look out for when trans people are seeking employment in an environment that will support their well-being and professional growth. Calvo Rosenstone will address what to look for in the corporate and tech sectors, while Endara will cover the nonprofit sector. Together, they will help participants “read between the lines” of DEI.
Audience: Trans and GNC people interviewing for new roles

I’m not going to die during this conference Call: reflections on availability and burnout
In information security, we are focused on ensuring confidentiality, integrity, and availability of our data and systems. We often monitor systems and services health for over utilization, packet loss and swapping, but we do not do the equivalent for people. When we attempt to measure people, we expect that they operate at full capacity all the time, hitting KPIs without considering the personal cost. Do we blame the server when it’s overloaded or has too many services running on it, competing for the same resources? No. We don’t give the engineers and analysts maintaining our infrastructure and products the same level of consideration that we give our critical systems. This session will propose ways to monitor people availability, ensure psychological safety, and proactively avoid burnout.
Attendees will gain perspective and a greater understanding of how the normalization of heroics is negatively affecting their teams.
Attendees will gain knowledge about mental labor and why this work needs to be recognized.
Attendees will learn strategies to ensure people’s availability and psychological safety.

StoryMaps For Beginners: telling stories through data using web applications, maps, and multimedia
A StoryMap uses online tools and maps to interactively communicate with an audience. Even if you’ve never made a website or a map before, sharing a story you care about using custom maps and web tools is completely within reach.
This workshop will teach you how to use a freely available, web-based application to create an engaging, interactive online StoryMap that can include maps, websites, text, and multimedia. We will explore and discuss a variety of examples. Then you can make your own basic StoryMap using sample data, resulting in your own editable, publishable StoryMap. These skills can be applied to make other, more complex StoryMaps. Basic references for further research/skill development will be provided. No coding is required; the workshop leverages public data.
Audience: This workshop is for those of us engaging audiences through data, creating awareness around key issues, or inspiring action; it’s for those of us experimenting with our own storytelling practices, looking to build spaces representing our communities, and who want to explore technology and learn a new web-based skill.

MAJOR!
MAJOR! explores the life and campaigns of Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, a formerly incarcerated Black transgender elder and activist who has been fighting for the rights of trans women of color for over 40 years.
Miss Major is a veteran of the Stonewall Rebellion and a survivor of Attica State Prison, a former sex worker, an elder, and a community leader and human rights activist. She is simply “Mama” to many in her community. Her personal story and activism for transgender civil rights intersects LGBT struggles for justice and equality from the 1960s to today. At the center of her activism is her fierce advocacy for her girls, trans women of color who have survived police brutality and incarceration in men’s jails and prisons.
We’ve compiled a Study Guide for educators and community leaders who would like to learn more about the legacy of Miss Major’s work for trans advocacy and the abolition of the Prison Industrial Complex.

Behind the Masc* featuring BOI Doc & TherActivist
THE BOI DOC
THE BOI DOC utilizes dialogue to break the silence created by racism, sexism, gender expression insensitivity, heterosexism, homophobia, and transphobia. It is our belief that when people are shown images of people they can relate to or see positive and productive members of society who look or live like them, they will aspire to do the same, but even more, they’ll see the humanity of the people whose story they’re hearing and see their own humanity reflected back. Furthermore, we believe when people see themselves reflected in the media, whether someone looks like them or is experiencing a similar situation, they not only feel accepted, but also affirmed and empowered.
THE BOI DOC is an artistic manifestation of the filmmakers desire to add their honest, uniquely provocative, and eloquent narratives about gender and gender expression through the Masculine and Masculine of Center queer voice of the people of the African diaspora to the world.
TherActvist: They/Them/Theirs
The TherActivist: They/Them/Theirs book and documentary project shines a light on the intersections of identity, diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging; gender expression and social justice activism against the backdrop of anti-Black racism, anti-LGBTQIA violence, and social exclusion. A combination of Black Lives Matter, LGBTQIA+ rights, equity and more! The TherActivist embodies a “therapeutic activism” approach, while servicing and empowering people of color, LGBTQIA+ communities, and marginalized populations.
